The Ultimate Stress-Free Moving Check List

Moving to a new home is exciting, but it can also be overwhelming. With the right planning, you can make the process much easier. Here are twenty essential tips to help your move go smoothly.

Avoid Moving on Possession Day

While it might seem convenient to move in the same day you get your keys, it’s best to wait at least a day. This gives you time to do a final walk-through, address any issues that may need to be brought up with your real estate agent, and give you extra time if any financing hiccups occur. Give yourself some time to make the home squeaky clean, or hire cleaning services the day after possession to help you get move-in ready.

Set Up Your Utilities in Advance

Make sure electricity, water, gas, and internet are set up before you arrive. Contact your service providers a couple of weeks ahead to schedule activation, so you’re not stuck in your new home without essential services. Many service providers offer discount codes for new customers, so be sure to check with friends, family, or search online to take advantage of any available deals.

Set Up Mail Forwarding

Be sure to sign up for Canada Post’s mail forwarding service so you’re not missing any important letters and bills in the middle of your move. Canada Post lets you choose your preferred start date for mail forwarding, allowing you to set it up well in advance. Also remember to update your mailing address for your bank, credit cards, subscription services, and other important services.

Purchase Home Insurance Before Moving In

Having homeowners or renters insurance in place before moving in safeguards you against unexpected damages or losses during the transition. Ensure your policy is active on or before your move-in date for complete peace of mind. Not sure where to start? We can connect you with a trusted insurance broker to help you find the best coverage at the right price.

Contact Your Strata (If Applicable)

Most stratas require advance notice, a moving fee, or a damage deposit when moving into the building. Your building manager may also help secure designated parking if you’re on a busy street. Contact them ahead of time and share this information with your moving company to avoid any delays.

Save Packing Supplies from Deliveries

Moving supplies can be expensive! If you know a move is coming up, start collecting packing materials like paper, bubble wrap, and large boxes from deliveries as early as possible. This not only helps reduce waste but also ensures you have plenty of supplies on hand when it’s time to pack.

Label Packing Boxes

Few things are more frustrating than searching for an important item by sifting through dozens of unmarked boxes. Label each box with a Sharpie or use colour-coded stickers to indicate which room it belongs to. This not only makes unpacking easier, but also helps you and your movers place items in the right place.

Pack an Emergency & First Night Box

Pack a box with essentials like medications, toiletries, chargers, important documents, a change of clothes/pyjamas, cleaning tools, trash bags, and basic tools and keep it with you at all times. This will save you from digging through boxes for necessities on your first night.

Keep a Cleaning Kit Handy

Even if your new home looks clean, you may want to give it a quick wipe-down before unpacking. Pack a kit with disinfectant sprays, paper towels, sponge, trash bags, a mop, and a vacuum cleaner for last-minute touch-ups.

Organize a Cooler with Drinks and Snacks

Moving is hard work. Pack bottled water, sports drinks, and snacks to keep yourself energized and avoid getting hangry. If your fridge is already cleaned out, consider scheduling a grocery delivery to ensure you have fresh food on hand for the busy days ahead.

Charge Phones and Bring a Power Bank

Whether it’s coordinating movers, finalizing utility setup, looking up directions, or contacting home helpers, your phone will be your lifeline on moving day. Fully charge your devices the night before and bring a power bank or charging cables as a backup.

Do a Final Walk-Through

Before leaving your old home, do a last check to ensure nothing is left behind. Look in cabinets, closets, tubs/showers, and storage areas to make sure everything has been packed.

Declutter Before Packing

Sort through your belongings before packing and donate, sell, or discard anything you no longer need. This will save you time and effort when unpacking in your new home. We’re happy to recommend trusted vendors to help you declutter, find new homes for your items, or dispose of them responsibly.

Protect Fragile Items

Use bubble wrap, packing paper, and sturdy boxes to protect delicate items. Label these boxes as "Fragile" to ensure careful handling.

Plan for Your Pets and Young Children

Moving can be stressful for pets and kids. Have them occupied in a quiet room, or see if you can have family or friends take care of them on the day of to reduce anxiety during the move.

Notify Friends and Family

Let loved ones know your new address so they can update their records and stay in touch.

Check Weather Conditions

If you’re moving during extreme or rainy weather, plan accordingly by having protective covers for furniture and extra supplies for unexpected delays.

Pick a Restaurant and Order Delivery in Advance

After a long day of moving, cooking is the last thing you’ll want to do. Choose a local restaurant in advance so you can place or schedule an order quickly and enjoy a well-earned meal in your new home. Be sure to ask for cutlery and napkins!

By following these tips, your move can be a smooth and hassle-free experience. Happy moving!
